On Monday 22nd November, a new system will be introduced on a trial basis in one class, as an alternative to paper towels and shared hand towels.
Each child will bring in his/her own wash bag / ziploc bag. In this bag there should be a small towel (a facecloth will suffice) or a bottle of alcohol hand sanitizer (liquid soap will be provided by the school).
Each child will take his/her own wash bag when he/she uses the toilet. The child's wash bag can be refilled at the weekend and brought back into school again the following Monday. This wash bag will be kept in the childs school bag each day and taken out when required.
This new procedure will facilitate greater hygiene and infection control within the classroom. This system is being run successfully in many schools throughout the city and county.
Initially, we will pilot this scheme in one class, to monitor how well it works and iron out any diffculties, before rolling it out to the whole school in the new year.

Summary Chairperson's Report, AGM Oct 2010
Throughout our busy year, we carry out many events, the first of which is the Book Fair, which generates revenue to buy books for the CAPER Scheme, Library and all the novels required by 5th and 6th classes. Another major event is the Communion reception which this year catered for up to 800 adults and 110 Communion kids.
We have many coffee mornings for parents with a very popular social night, this year, a pub quiz in Frankfield House.
We started a book loan scheme this year involving the 4 readers used in senior infants, parents responded generously and donated many books. We hope to extend this scheme to other classes over time.
Fundraising is necessary to fund these projects and we do this through bag packs, raffles, cake sales, annual walk, Christmas calendars and letters. Parents are very supportive and we are always grateful.
All money raised goes back into the school, for instance, this year we purchased interactive white boards, gardening equipment, hi vis vests and much more.
Finally thanks to all the parents on the committee and the sub committee, Michael, Sile, Pam, Michael, Kieran Daly and Declan Madden.

Scoil Nioclais Intercultural Day Friday 18th June
One of our great traditions here at Scoil Nioclais is our annual Intercultural day where students can both learn and explain different aspects of other cultures. In the past we have had great support from parents on this day, whereby they came and brought a taste of their country to the students. Events included:
-Dance and Musical displays
-Cookery demonstrations and sharing of recipes
-Wearing and explanations of National Costumes
-A visit to your child's class to talk about your country
-Story telling, translations and much more.
We would be delighted to hear from parents who would like to bring a little of their native country to Scoil Nioclais and would welcome any ideas you have. Help us keep this wonderful tradition going by contacting Orla (SNPA), through the school office or Rosemary in Room 18.

SOCIAL NIGHT
The table quiz which took place on Friday, 23rd April in Frankfield House was a great success. There were some fantastic prizes on the night and a big thank you to all those that came along. We hope you all enjoyed the evening.
Congratulations to the winning team, Crystal Swing and to Sober Lane, who came in a close second.
SENIOR INFANTS READING BOOK SCHEME
Each year parents of senior infants purchase 4 general readers i.e. Little Hippo Gets Lost, Animals in the Trolley, Honey Bears Party and Lion in the Mud.
In an attempt to help future pupils and to reduce the overall cost of school books, we are asking parents to donate these readers to the school when finished with them. These books will be held in the classrooms and lent to future pupils, thereby saving parents having to purchase these books in the future.
If you are interested in partaking in this scheme, please contact your class teacher. Thank you for your support with this initiative.

The Pitch in Ardfield
Several parents have approached us at the SNPA regarding the school using the pitch in Ardfield. Having such a resource unused and so close to the school is unfortunate, therefore we did some research into the situation.
We understand from the Council the school is not eligible to take over the pitch, however if a club were in situ then Scoil Nioclais could hire the pitch for the use of the school. There is an application process in the Council where interested clubs can apply and obtain the use of the pitch if they satisfy certain criteria.
However in order to do this, the pitch would have to be handed over to the council by Westbrook Housing and they are very keen to do this as soon as possible.
We hope that this process will proceed and in the near future Scoil Nioclais will have the option of using this great facility. As soon as we know more, we will update this blog!

CAKE SALE
A cake sale was held in Frankfield Church in October last year. A big thank you to all those who baked for the sale and, of course to those who purchased. For the first time this year, we had cakes on sale after 7pm mass on Saturday and we were pleased with the overall response.
BOOK FAIR
The annual Scoil Nioclais Book Fair took place during one week in November. This was a wonderful opportunity for parents and pupils to purchase a wide range of high quality interesting books. We are very pleased to report that arising from this scheme, the school is in a position to purchase school novels for 5th and 6th classes, which form part of their school curriculum. Also a large volume of books have now arrived in for the school library.

Coin Trail for Haiti 2010
An astounding €1,572.44 was raised through our recent coin trail and all proceeds went to Goal! It was a fantastic effort on behalf of all the kids and parents! We also had some great photos in the Evening Echo and some will also appear on the Goal website.
Also that morning the SNPA organised a coffee morning for parents to get together for a chat with each other and also to meet the committee members. This was a great success and we hope to do have another coffee morning next term! So pop along and catch up with other parents!
